Start with Hello Week: Building Community Together

Our school celebrated Start with Hello Week (Aug. 25–29). This nationwide initiative from Sandy Hook Promise teaches students the importance of reaching out, building connections, and making sure no one feels left out. Each day gave our students opportunities to learn, practice kindness, and grow closer as a school family.

Elementary Highlights

Elementary students learned new ways to say “hello” in different languages, celebrated their unique identities, identified trusted adults in our school and community, created heart friendship chains, practiced affirmations, and built posters highlighting positive character traits. On Friday, they came together for a colorful celebration wearing tie-dye and jeans. Each class recognized four “Upstanders” in their class by voting on who they felt were good friends, welcoming to others, and who always stood up for the right thing.

Middle School Highlights

Middle School students not only learned how to tie-dye but also became leaders by teaching the skill to Elementary students. We chose tie-dye because it represents how God created each of us to be unique and wonderfully made (Psalm 139:14). Just like the colors swirl together to create something beautiful, we too are each different, yet God weaves us together into one body and one community. Our tie-dye shirts became a reminder that when we bring our unique gifts together, we create something special and united.

In addition to tie-dye, Middle School focused on the importance of trusted adults—identifying the people we can rely on when we need guidance, support, or a listening ear. To bring this lesson to life, students participated in the Index Card Tower of Trust Challenge, learning that building trust takes time, teamwork, and sometimes even rebuilding when things fall apart.

Pep Rally Celebration

We wrapped up the week with a school-wide Pep Rally. Elementary students received Upstander Awards for showing courage and kindness, enjoyed fun games, and were supported by our Middle School Student Council, who helped lead the activities. Afterward, Middle School continued with a special session led by Mr. Jon Forrest, who encouraged students to keep building connections and including everyone.

A Week of Connection

Start with Hello Week reminded us all that small actions—like saying hello, offering encouragement, or lending a helping hand—can make a big difference in helping others feel seen and included. We are proud of how both our Elementary and Middle School students embraced this important message and look forward to carrying it with us throughout the year.
